NASA's next Moon mission won't actually land on the Moon โ and that's the point. Artemis III, now scheduled for 2027, has quietly been redesigned from a lunar-surface landing into what is effectively a high-stakes dress rehearsal: four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will stay in Earth orbit and separately rendezvous and dock with prototype landers built by two competing companies, SpaceX and Blue Origin, before NASA commits to an actual landing attempt on Artemis IV in 2028.
The astronauts assigned to the mission โ Randy Bresnik, Luca Parmitano, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas โ will effectively referee a head-to-head contest NASA itself set up between the two companies. Orion will dock first with Blue Origin's Mark 1 lander, with crew opening the hatch in a test run for future lunar operations, and separately with SpaceX's Starship V3, the latest iteration of the vehicle that forms the basis of its own Human Landing System.
Why NASA built in a backup plan
The unusual two-lander structure isn't a coincidence โ it's insurance. Both companies have hit real turbulence this year. Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded on the pad last month, a setback serious enough that John Couluris, the company's senior vice president of lunar permanence, felt compelled to say publicly that officials remain "confident that New Glenn will be ready for Artemis III." SpaceX, meanwhile, has reported hitting 49 development milestones toward its own lander as of late last year, but Starship's own test-flight record has been uneven enough that NASA has structured the mission so that either vehicle's delay doesn't sink the whole program.
A rehearsal with real history behind it
NASA has compared the mission's orbital-rendezvous structure to Apollo 9, the 1969 mission that tested the lunar module in Earth orbit before any crew attempted an actual Moon landing โ a deliberate echo, agency officials say, of a program that once also had to prove out unfamiliar hardware before trusting it with a crew hundreds of thousands of miles from home. If the Artemis III tests go well, NASA plans to follow up with an uncrewed Blue Origin Mark 1 lander carrying the agency's VIPER rover to the lunar south pole by late 2027, hunting for water ice that could support future missions.
The China factor
The mission is also being read, fairly or not, through the lens of a new space race. Artemis II's successful crewed flyby of the Moon earlier this year was widely covered as a milestone in the "new space race" against China's own lunar ambitions โ and Artemis III's outcome will help determine whether NASA can keep pace with that timeline using two still-unproven commercial landers, or whether 2028's planned crewed landing slips further still.
